Top 100 Comics: July 2012
Robert Kirkman's acclaimed zombie apocalypse series The Walking Dead, which has become a genuine pop culture phenomenon over the past year thanks to AMC's television series, reached a milestone issue with July's The Walking Dead #100 from Image Comics and, with covers from several of comics' top artists, was the best-selling book to comics retailers in July.
Marvel Comics' biweekly summer event, Avengers Vs. X-Men, continued in July with three books in the top ten — Avengers Vx. X-Men #7 at #2, Avengers Vs. X-Men #8 at #3, and AVX Vs. #4 at #7.
DC Comics rounded out the top ten with six titles, led by the conclusion of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo's "Night of the Owls" storyline in Batman #11 at #4. Also in the top ten were Justice League #11 at #5, Before Watchman: Ozymandias #1 at #6, Detective Comics #11 at #8, Green Lantern #11 at #9, and Action Comics #11 at #10.
Dark Horse Comics' top book in July was Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #11 which continues the adventures of Joss Whedon's popular television series; the book ranked #83 for the month.
Rounding out the premier publishers, an untold adventure of Captain Kirk and the fourth Doctor unfolded in Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 #3, IDW Publishing's top book for July at #100 on the sales chart.

Please note that comics marked with an asterisk have had their reported quantities reduced due to retailer returnability, and thus may rank lower on the charts than their actual sales would reflect.
How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.
Data for Diamond’s sales charts – which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts – are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 accounts, comprised of comic book specialty shops and other merchant stores and buyers. The shops are primarily located in North America, with a percentage of sales also to international stores and buyers located throughout the world. The account base includes not only brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, but also Internet stores, chain stores, and other specialty stores.
Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during any given month, minus any copies that are distributed free of cost.
About the Diamond Sales Index: The Sales Index of selected monthly Best Seller Charts is presented as a comparative tool for retailers and publishers. It presents Diamond’s monthly sales for individual titles in relation to Diamond’s total sales for the issue of DC Comics' monthly Batman comic book. (Batman is used as the control title – with a value of 100 – because sales of Batman usually remain relatively stable.) This allows for easy comparison to other titles and helps retailers gauge their orders for all other titles. This formula is only a guide, other factors may impact a titles’ ability to sell in certain locations and clientele.
