Topps Announces Star Wars Heritage Trading Card Series!

In September, The Topps Company will debut Star Wars Heritage, an ambitious new trading card series encompassing all six Star Wars motion pictures -- including a sneak peek at next year's saga-ending Star Wars: Episode III!

Timed to coincide with the long-awaited DVD release of the original Star Wars trilogy, Star Wars Heritage will be promoted via the distribution of 1,000,000 copies of six different promo cards. Each different promo card will represent one of the six Star Wars films, with the Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back card being available exclusively through the July Previews -- the same month in which the Star Wars Heritage Trading Card Box will be solicited through Diamond!

Including Previews' Empire Strikes Back card, the Star Wars Heritage promo cards will be available as follows:

In addition to the promo card campaign, Star Wars Heritage will be supported by a major publicity initiative, along with print advertising in specialty, hobby, and mainstream magazines. All of these efforts will be coordinated around the same September window period as the release of the Star Wars Trilogy DVD, which promises to be one of the most sought-after DVD releases to date.

For the creation of this unique set, Topps is using its white-hot Topps Heritage brand, which has enjoyed high levels of success with sports-themed series. As with the sports-based Heritage issues, Star Wars Heritage will feature vintage card designs on greyback stock and a wrapped piece of bubblegum in every pack.

"The melding of Star Wars with Topps Heritage is a great, natural fit," said Topps Vice President of Publishing and New Product Development Ira Friedman. "The timeless appeal of Star Wars imagery -- combined with the nostalgia sensibilities of the Heritage brand -- all adds up to one retro-cool collectible.

"On its own, we believe Star Wars Heritage is a very worthy and compelling card set. We're confident that the added benefit of releasing the series around a milestone occasion as the DVD launch will broaden the audience of consumers enjoying our trading cards."
