Top 100 Comics: July 2011
Spider-Man faces one of his greatest challenges — the emergence of spider-powers like his in a million New Yorkers — in the prelude to the "Spider-Island" storyline in Dan Slott and Stefano Caselli's Amazing Spider-Man #666 from Marvel Comics, July's best-selling comic book to comics and specialty retailers.
In July Marvel took five of the top ten spots on the sales charts including Amazing Spider-Man #666. At #2 for the month was Ed Brubaker and Steve McNiven's Captain America #1 which returned Steve Rogers to the costume. Matt Fraction and Stuart Immonen's Fear Itself #4 ranked #3. Mark Waid, Paolo Manuel Rivera, and Marcos Martin restored Matt Murdock as the Man Without Fear in Daredevil #1, the month's #6 book. Finally, Brian Michael Bendis and Chris Bachalo's Avengers #15 ranked #8.
DC Comics also had five books in the top ten for July, with Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert's Flashpoint #3 leading the way at #4. "War of the Green Lanterns" came to its close in Green Lantern #67 from Johns, Doug Mahnke, and Christian Alamy, the month's #5 book. David Finch's Batman: The Dark Knight #3 ranked #7, Tony Bedard and Miguel Sepulveda's War of the Green Lanterns: Aftermath #1 ranked #9, and Bedard and Tyler Kirkham's Green Lantern Corps #61 ranked #10.
Among the premier publishers, Dark Horse Comics' Hellboy: The Fury #2 from Mike Mignola and Duncan Fegredo ranked #119 for July. IDW Publishing's top-selling title in July was The Rocketeer Adventures #3, which ranked #140 for the month. Finally, Image Comics' The Walking Dead #87 from Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard was the publisher's top book, ranked #51 for the month.

For retailers, Diamond offers the Top 300 Comics and Top 300 Graphic Novels sales charts on the Diamond Tools page of the Diamond Retailer Services website to provide more information about the industry's top selling publications.
How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.
Data for Diamond’s sales charts – which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts – are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 accounts, comprised of comic book specialty shops and other merchant stores and buyers. The shops are primarily located in North America, with a percentage of sales also to international stores and buyers located throughout the world. The account base includes not only brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, but also Internet stores, chain stores, and other specialty stores.
Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during any given month, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.
About the Diamond Sales Index: The Sales Index of selected monthly Best Seller Charts is presented as a comparative tool for retailers and publishers. It presents Diamond’s monthly sales for individual titles in relation to Diamond’s total sales for the issue of DC Comics' monthly Batman comic book. (Batman is used as the control title – with a value of 100 – because sales of Batman usually remain relatively stable.) This allows for easy comparison to other titles and helps retailers gauge their orders for all other titles. This formula is only a guide, other factors may impact a titles’ ability to sell in certain locations and clientele.
