Top 100 Graphic Novels: October 2012
Clark Kent makes new friends in Metropolis and faces new threats as Superman in J. Michael Straczynski and Shane Davis' Superman: Earth One Volume 2, the sequel to their best-selling graphic novel of 2011 and the best-selling graphic novel in October.
In total, DC Comics had five books in the top ten. Batman: The Dark Knight Volume 1: Knight Terrors, collecting the first arc of Paul Jenkins and David Finch's Batman epic, ranked #6. Nightwing Volume 1: Traps and Trapezes ranked #8, the V For Vendetta book and mask set ranked #9, and Batman Volume 1: The Court of Owls returned to the top ten and ranked #10.
Image Comics had four titles in the top ten, led by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples' Saga Volume 1 at #2, which collected the first story arc of the acclaimed science-fiction epic. Also, three collected editions of Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead placed in the top ten. The Walking Dead Compedium Volume 2, a collection of issues #49 through #96, ranked #3. The Walking Dead Volume 1: Days Gone Bye ranked #4, and The Walking Dead Volume 2: Miles Behind Us ranked #5.
Rounding out the top ten, Marvel Comics' Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe ranked #7.
Dark Horse Comics' top book in October was Star Trek: Agent of the Empire Volume 1: Iron Eclipse which ranked #36.
Rounding out the premier publishers, IDW Publishing's Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye Volume 2 was the publisher's top book at #106.

For retailers, Diamond offers the Top 300 Comics and Top 300 Graphic Novels sales charts on the Diamond Tools page of the Diamond Retailer Services website to provide more information about the industry's top selling publications.
How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.
Data for Diamond’s sales charts – which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts – are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 accounts, comprised of comic book specialty shops and other merchant stores and buyers. The shops are primarily located in North America, with a percentage of sales also to international stores and buyers located throughout the world. The account base includes not only brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, but also Internet stores, chain stores, and other specialty stores.
Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during any given month, minus any copies that are distributed free of cost.
About the Diamond Sales Index: The Sales Index of selected monthly Best Seller Charts is presented as a comparative tool for retailers and publishers. It presents Diamond’s monthly sales for individual titles in relation to Diamond’s total sales for the issue of DC Comics' monthly Batman comic book. (Batman is used as the control title – with a value of 100 – because sales of Batman usually remain relatively stable.) This allows for easy comparison to other titles and helps retailers gauge their orders for all other titles. This formula is only a guide, other factors may impact a titles’ ability to sell in certain locations and clientele.
