Top 100 Comics: October 2009
The assault of the undead Black Lanterns on the heroes of the Earth and the rise of their leader Nekron in writer Geoff Johns and artist Ivan Reis' Blackest Night #4 provided DC Comics with the bestselling comic in the month of October, according to information from Diamond Comic Distributors.
DC Comics had the top six best-selling comics titles in the top 10 bestselling comics for the month, with five of those titles based around the Blackest Night event. In addition to the aforementioned Blackest Night #4, Green Lantern #7 at #3, Blackest Night: Batman #3 at #4, Green Lantern Corps #41 at #5, and Blackest Night: Superman #3 at #6 all tied into the crossover. DC's one non-Blackest Night-related title in the top 10, Grant Morrison and Philip Tan's Batman and Robin #5, placed at #2 on the October comics sales chart.
Marvel Comics rounded out the top 10 bestselling comics with four titles in October — New Avengers #58 at #7 and Dark Avengers #10 at #8 both continued the bestselling Dark Reign story arc; Uncanny X-Men #516 at #9 kicked off the seven-part "Nation X" storyline that sees the return of the X-Men's oldest foe, Magneto; and Amazing Spider-Man #608 at #10 began the "Who Was Ben Reilly?" storyline.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.
Data for Diamond’s sales charts – which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts – are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 4,000+ accounts, comprised of comic book specialty shops and other merchant stores and buyers. The shops are primarily located in North America, with a percentage of sales also to international stores and buyers located throughout the world. The account base includes not only brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, but also Internet stores, chain stores, and other specialty stores.
Unit and dollar sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during any given month, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.
About the Diamond Sales Index: The Sales Index of selected monthly Bestseller Charts is presented as a comparative tool for retailers and publishers. It presents Diamond’s monthly sales for individual titles in relation to Diamond’s total sales for the issue of DC Comics' monthly Batman comic book. (Batman is used as the control title – with a value of 100 – because sales of Batman usually remain relatively stable.) This allows for easy comparison to other titles and helps retailers gauge their orders for all other titles. This formula is only a guide, other factors may impact a titles’ ability to sell in certain locations and clientele.
