Top 100 Graphic Novels and TPs: December 2009
A new masked adventurer and the Republican National Convention both complicate the life of New York City Mayor Mitchell Hundred in Ex Machina Volume 8: Dirty Tricks, the latest collected volume of the political superhero series from Brian K. Vaughn and Tony Harris, giving DC Comics' Wildstorm imprint the best-selling graphic novel in the month of December. DC Comics also placed Batman: The Cat and the Bat at #6 for the month, collecting the storyline from Batman Confidential that matched Batgirl against Catwoman.
Marvel Comics had three graphic novels in December's top ten. Deadpool Volume 2: Dark Reign, chronicling the Merc with a Mouth's adventures in the wake of Secret Invasion, placed #2 for the month, followed by the Marvel Zombies Return hardcover at #7 and Ultimatum: X-Men/Fantastic Four, collecting the final adventures of these teams in the Ultimate Universe as the Ultimatum crossover unfolded, placed #10.
Dark Horse Comics placed two graphic novels in the top ten — Star Wars: The Clone Wars Volume 4: The Colossus of Destiny at #3 and The Goon Volume 6: Chinatown and the Mystery of Mr. Wicker at #9.
Other publishers in the top ten include BOOM! Studios' Irredeemable Volume 2 at #4, VIZ Media's Bleach Volume 29 at #5, and IDW Publishing's The Rocketeer: The Complete Collection hardcover at #8.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.
Data for Diamond’s sales charts – which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts – are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 4,000+ accounts, comprised of comic book specialty shops and other merchant stores and buyers. The shops are primarily located in North America, with a percentage of sales also to international stores and buyers located throughout the world. The account base includes not only brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, but also Internet stores, chain stores, and other specialty stores.
Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during any given month, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.
About the Diamond Sales Index: The Sales Index of selected monthly Best Seller Charts is presented as a comparative tool for retailers and publishers. It presents Diamond’s monthly sales for individual titles in relation to Diamond’s total sales for the issue of DC Comics' monthly Batman comic book. (Batman is used as the control title – with a value of 100 – because sales of Batman usually remain relatively stable.) This allows for easy comparison to other titles and helps retailers gauge their orders for all other titles. This formula is only a guide, other factors may impact a titles’ ability to sell in certain locations and clientele.
