Top 100 Graphic Novels and TPs: January 2010
Just optioned by AMC for a television series, Image Comics' The Walking Dead from writer Robert Kirkman and artist Charlie Adlard has revolutioning zombie comics. The collection The Walking Dead Volume 11: Fear the Hunters gave Image the best-selling graphic novel in January as it collected the series' latest story arc.
DC Comics had three books in the top ten graphic novels for January. Leading the way from their Vertigo imprint was The Unwritten Volume 1: Tommy Taylor and the Bogus Identity at #2, which collected the debut issues of their new series about a young man who was the subject a series of children's books when he was younger. Chill, from the Vertigo Crime imprint, ranked #5, and House of Mystery Volume 3: The Space Between, also from the Vertigo imprint, ranked #7.
Marvel Comics had four books in the top ten with Ultimate Spider-Man Volume 22: Ultimatum, which showed the effect of the Ultimatum crossover on the world of Spider-Man, their top book at #3. This was followed by the collected edition of Ultimatum at #4, Captain America: Road to Reborn at #6, and Siege Prelude, which collected a number of stories leading up to this winter's Siege crossover, ranked #10 for the month.
Rounding out the top ten graphic novels for January was Dark Horse Comics, with two volumes in the top reaches of the chart. Blade of the Immortal Volume 22: Footsteps, the latest volume of the long-running and best-selling manga, placed #8 on the chart, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Volume 9: Destroyer ranked #9.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.
Data for Diamond’s sales charts – which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts – are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 4,000+ accounts, comprised of comic book specialty shops and other merchant stores and buyers. The shops are primarily located in North America, with a percentage of sales also to international stores and buyers located throughout the world. The account base includes not only brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, but also Internet stores, chain stores, and other specialty stores.
Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during any given month, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.
About the Diamond Sales Index: The Sales Index of selected monthly Best Seller Charts is presented as a comparative tool for retailers and publishers. It presents Diamond’s monthly sales for individual titles in relation to Diamond’s total sales for the issue of DC Comics' monthly Batman comic book. (Batman is used as the control title – with a value of 100 – because sales of Batman usually remain relatively stable.) This allows for easy comparison to other titles and helps retailers gauge their orders for all other titles. This formula is only a guide, other factors may impact a titles’ ability to sell in certain locations and clientele.
