Top 100 Comics: July 2010
The X-Men faced their gravest threat as the Marvel Universe's vampires arose and attacked San Francisco in by Victor Gischler and Paco Medina's X-Men #1, giving Marvel Comics the top spot on the comics sales chart in July 2010.
In total, Marvel Comics had four of the ten ten books in July. In addition to X-Men 31, Brian Michael Bendis and John Romita, Jr.'s Avengers #3 ranked #4, Bendis and Stuart Immonen's New Avengers #2 ranked #7, and Ed Brubaker and Mike Deodato, Jr.'s Secret Avengers #3 ranked #10.
DC Comics took the other six spots on the top ten best-selling comics chart in July. Leading off with Brightest Day #6 at #2, DC also had Grant Morrison's Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #4 at #3, Batman and Robin #13 at #4, Green Lantern #56 at #6, Brightest Day #5 at #8, and Batman #701 at #9.
Among other Premiere publishers, Dark Horse Comics' top book in July was Jim Shooter's highly-anticipated relaunch of a classic Silver Age character in Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom #1 at #91. IDW Publishing's True Blood #1, based on HBO's wildly popular vampire television series, ranked #65 for the month of July. Finally, Image Comics' top book in July was Robert Kirkman's popular zombie comic (and soon to be an AMC television series) The Walking Dead #75 at #68.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.
Data for Diamond’s sales charts – which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts – are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 accounts, comprised of comic book specialty shops and other merchant stores and buyers. The shops are primarily located in North America, with a percentage of sales also to international stores and buyers located throughout the world. The account base includes not only brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, but also Internet stores, chain stores, and other specialty stores.
Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during any given month, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.
About the Diamond Sales Index: The Sales Index of selected monthly Best Seller Charts is presented as a comparative tool for retailers and publishers. It presents Diamond’s monthly sales for individual titles in relation to Diamond’s total sales for the issue of DC Comics' monthly Batman comic book. (Batman is used as the control title – with a value of 100 – because sales of Batman usually remain relatively stable.) This allows for easy comparison to other titles and helps retailers gauge their orders for all other titles. This formula is only a guide, other factors may impact a titles’ ability to sell in certain locations and clientele.
