The 6^th  Air Wing, based in Komatsu, was established in 1961. The wing, charged with the defense of Japan Sea airspace, is composed of the F-15 equipped 303^rd  and 306^th  Flight Squadrons. The 6^th  was originally comprised of F-68s, but beginning in 1987 with the 303^rd  and 1997 with the 306^th, individual units began to switch over to the F-15, the plane that the wing flies today. Each year, the Air Self-Defense Force hold the All Air Groups Combat Skills Competition to improve and hone the essential combat skills of the force's fighting units.
