Sutton, Comics Artist, Passes Away
Comics veteran Tom Sutton passed away at his drawing board on May 3. The
artist was 65 years old.
Beginning his comics career in 1967, Sutton went on to illustrate comics for Charlton Comics, DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, First Comics, Marvel Comics, Skywald, among others. A diverse artist, his work could be found in a wide variety of titles, including: Amazing Adventures, Conan the Barbarian, Creepy, Daredevil, Death Rattle, Dr. Strange, Grimjack, Harlan Ellison's Dream Corridor, Marvel Premiere, Planet of the Apes, Rawhide Kid, Star Hunter, Star Trek, and many more. One of Sutton's memorable contributions to comics was his role as the first artist to illustrate the iconic femme fatale Vampirella within the pages of Vampirella #1. The artist spent his later years illustrating adult titles for Fantagraphics Books' Eros imprint under the pseudonym “Dementia.”
Although Sutton primarily worked as a comics artist, he also created illustrations for a variety of mediums. Notably, he produced the album cover art to Alice Cooper's 1972 album, Nice Guys Sleep Alone, and illustrated John Carnell's November 2001 novel, The Roadkill of Middle-earth: A Parody. Sutton also exhibited his paintings of bar scenes in local New England galleries and created extensive commercial art for various ad agencies.
