Diamond Offers Improved Discount on Drawn & Quarterly Titles
Effective October 1, Diamond has increased the discount on Drawn & Quarterly’s acclaimed line of comics and graphic novel titles.
Formerly available at an “H” discount (lower of 40% or standard discount), all newly solicited D+Q books and backlist titles will now be offered at an “F” discount (lower of 45% or standard discount), making them more lucrative than ever before.
Diamond will also now have in stock all current D+Q titles to allow for easier ordering and reordering of the D+Q catalogue. Retailers with questions about how this will affect their billing should contact their regular Diamond Customer Service Representative for more information.
Publisher Chris Oliveros’s sensibilities – coupled with the total editorial and creative freedom afforded the creators – enabled Drawn & Quarterly to make a permanent mark in the world of comics. In the past two decades, D+Q has grown from being a comic company to a book publisher with an amazing list of bestselling titles by cartoonists like Chester Brown, Adrian Tomine, Julie Doucet, Joe Sacco and R. Crumb. Growing more ambitious every year, the publisher continues to seek out new comic books, art books and graphic novels by renowned cartoonists and newcomers from around the globe.Refer to the Drawn & Quarterly section of the October PREVIEWS for complete information on the publisher’s latest titles, including Oji Suzuki’s A Single Match HC (OCT100995F, $24.95), Pascal Girard’s Bigfoot HC (OCT100997F, $19.95), and Anders Nilsen’s Big Questions #15 (OCT100996F, $7.95), as well as Imiri Sakabashira’s The Box Man HC (OCT100998F, $24.95), a relisted PREVIEWS “Star of the Month.”
In The Box Man, readers enter the strange world of Imiri Sakabashira, whose denizens are zoomorphic creatures that emerge from one another as well as their equally bizarre environs. The hardcover follows its protagonists along a scooter trip through a complex landscape that oscillates between a dense city, a countryside simplified to near abstraction, and hybrids of the two. Sakabashira weaves this absurdist tale in a seamless tapestry constructed of elements as seemingly disparate as Japanese folklore, pop culture, and surrealism. The “F” discount now applies to all of Drawn & Quarterly’s backlist titles, including collections like The John Stanley Library: Thirteen Going on Eighteen HC (OCT090876F, $39.95). Written and illustrated by the writer/artist of Little Lulu in the 1960s, Thirteen Going on Eighteen – dealing with the social troubles teenagers face – can now be considered part period piece and part character study, standing the test of time. This hardcover is a great item for retailers who have done well with other D+Q collections, like The John Stanley Library: Melvin Monster HC Vol. 1 (JAN094196F, $19.95), which features all ten issues about the oddball monster boy who just wants to be good, go to school, and do as he's told. While Stanley is celebrated as one of the great children's comics writers for his work on Little Lulu, that series is but a small part of his output. In fact, he drew and continued to write many other comics – notably his work on the 1960s teen comics (like Thirteen Going on Eighteen) from Dell and his monster comedy strip, Melvin Monster.
Also available at the new, greater discount is writer Marguerite Abouet & artist Clement Oubrerie’s Aya: The Secrets Come Out HC (JUL090843F, $19.95). Abouet & Oubrerie cultivated a strong readership with the preceding hardcovers in this series, Aya (JUL083945F, $19.95) and Aya of Yop City (JUL083945F, $19.95), by providing fascinating, universal insights into African culture that many readers would not otherwise experience. This latest tale continues that excursion as Aya and her friends find themselves desiring to break free as issues like arranged marriage and gay love are causing values to shift dramatically. But their yearning to be free collides with the strong, familiar ties of friendship and support that tether them to their community, providing the setting for an unflinching take on human strengths, foibles, and capriciousness in this 140-page, full-color title.
A must-have for fans of the Eisner and Harvey Award-winning creator, Chris Ware’s The ACME Novelty Library Volume HC #19 (AUG084007F) is also available for reorder now from Diamond with the “F” discount. Originally published in the early ‘90s in the pages of the Chicago alt weekly New City, the critically acclaimed strip, winner of critical praise and several comic awards, is where Ware honed his distinctive style and introduced such popular titles as Jimmy Corrigan – The Smartest Kid on Earth. In this volume, Ware returns to the serialization of his “Rusty Brown” strip in a new chapter that examines the life, work and teaching techniques of one of its central real-life protagonists, W.K. Brown. The 80-page, full-color volume has been reformatted to accommodate the different material, now boasting a vertical shape and tasteful design.
Take this opportunity to offer your patrons some of the comic industry’s most innovative illustrated literature – now with an “F” discount that translates into increased profits for you – by stocking up on the best of Drawn & Quarterly!
