Viz Communications and Shueisha, Inc. unveiled a special preview issue of the U.S. version of Shonen Jump - Shonen Jump #0 - at Comic-Con International: San Diego. The 56-page preview edition, an abridged representation of what the 200-plus-page regular issues, was unveiled at a July 31 reception for industry VIPs and the press hosted by Viz and Shueisha executives at the Westin Horton Plaza.

“Bringing Shonen Jump to America is an important milestone in realizing the vision our company was founded on 16 years ago - to introduce U.S. audiences to the joys of manga,” said Viz Communications President Seiji Horibuchi. “Shonen Jump is the first English-language manga publication targeted at the mainstream mass-market. Manga has long been immensely popular in Japan. Thanks to the Web and American television, it is now becoming an exploding phenomenon in the U.S.”

The U.S. version of Shonen Jump is patterned after Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump (which has a weekly circulation of over 3.4 million readers), and will reprint Dragon Ball Z and Yu-Gi-Oh! (two of the world's most popular anime properties), as well as Naruto, One Piece, Sandland, Shaman King, and Yuyu Hakusho. The magazine is printed in English, but retains the Japanese right-to-left format so that the manga artwork remains true to the exact way the storytellers intended.

“The manga titles featured in Shonen Jump are always positive,” explained Shueisha's Senior Editorial Director Kazuhiko Torishima, “as the main characters are forward looking and give kids hope. Our Japanese artists have created characters and adventures which are very appealing and require a great emotional investment on the part of the reader, more so than the normal comic book.”

Viz plans Shonen Jump to achieve monthly circulation levels of over one million within the first three years of release.
