From The Scoop: It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Sets Auction Records for Rock Posters

From the February 4 issue of Gemstone Publishing's The Scoop:

Rock and roll collectibles are exploding in the marketplace. One of the most exciting auction houses offering rock-related items is It's Only Rock N Roll. There is no better proof of the expanding nature of rock collectibles than the results of their most recent auction.

When that auction ended on December 15 with a total of $1,238,000, the results were so overwhelming it took the owners, Marc and Deb Zakarin awhile to recover. They were floored by the response from their customers. Bidders from 32 states and eleven foreign countries participated in the record-breaking sale.

"Rock posters are going through the roof," says Marc Zakarin. "Prior to this past June, $30,000 was the record for a rock poster. Naturally, that record was set with an Elvis poster. Then in June, we received $69,000 for a Beatles at Shea Stadium poster. Now, at our most recent auction in December, we sold a Beatles poster from the 1966 Shea Stadium concert for $132,000."

Zakarin loves to talk about the Beatles second concert at Shea. "Everybody forgets that the second one wasn't the hit that the first one in 1965 was. For this one, they actually had 11,000 tickets unsold." This wasn't the only Beatles poster that commanded top dollar. The Beatles also played a show in Cleveland on the same 1966 tour and it brought $38,000.

The poster results weren't just limited to the Beatles either. A 1958 Everly Brothers with Buddy Holly at the Paramount Theater realized $34,000 and a 1966 Trips Festival Poster featuring The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane brought $20,000.00.

This incredible enthusiasm for the items they auction even comes through their listings. Their on-site results are detailed and a joy to read. Other highlights of the auction include A Jimi Hendrix psychedelic ($46,000.00), A Miles Davis owned and played trumpet ($25,000.00), a complete, sealed set of Beatles Mono LP records ($23,000.00), The Beatles' Abbey Road studio recording console ($37,000.00), and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain artwork on a drum head ($18,000).

Their next Auction is tentatively scheduled for sometime in the spring of this year. Until then, you can easily spend two days viewing the results of their last auction at www.itsonlyrocknroll.com.
