From The Scoop: Geppi’s Memorabilia Road Show to Auction Padell Collection Items

Rare sports memorabilia from the Bert Padell Collection has been obtained by Geppi's Memorabilia Road Show and will be available at auction in September.
The Padell Collection is one of the hobby's best kept secrets. Seldom seen by the general public, rarely written about, and lovingly assembled for more than a half-century by Mr. Padell, the collection's primary pieces have long been coveted by those with knowledge of the material. Some have compared the treasures to the Barry Halper Collection, which was auctioned in 1999, and Mr. Halper, a senior consultant to Geppi's, has long marveled at the items in the collection.
Included is a 1918 Boston Red Sox agreement with Babe Ruth, signed by both Ruth and Sox owner Harry Frazee, which called for bonuses if Ruth were to win a specified number of games. It was said that as he approached the bonus clauses, his playing time in the outfield increased (to save Frazee from paying), leading to him becoming the player of legend that he is today.
Also among the collection of some 1500 items is Jack Norworth's original handwritten lyrics to “Take Me Out to the Ballgame, “ a game used bat of Joe DiMaggio's from the 1950 World Series, a full set of the Yankees 1935 player contracts, and a turnstile from Ebbets Field, Lou Gehrig's locker, given to Bert by clubhouse chief Pete Sheehy, a 1950 bat with 250 American League signatures, and '47 Yankee bat signed by the whole team (DiMaggio twice), and the book and movie contracts signed by Ruth for The Babe Ruth Story.”
Padell was a Yankee batboy in 1949-1950, Casey Stengel's first two seasons, both world championship years. He formed lifelong friendships with players from the time, and went on to become the founding partner in the business management and accounting firm Padell, Nadell, Fine and Weinberger LLP. Known as the “financial advisor to the stars,” his clients have included Robert DeNiro, Madonna, Britney Spears, Alicia Keys, Talking Heads, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Faye Dunaway, Pink Floyd, Run DMC, Madeline Kahn, Lorraine Bracco, Stanley Tucci, Cyndi Lauper, Earl Monroe, Blondie, Peter Max, Ben Vereen, and many more. He was DiMaggio's business manager for 11 years.

The September auction will also feature the historic collection of Stanley Weston and Toby Weston Cone, considered the greatest assemblage of boxing memorabilia ever offered, a collection once showcased as the “Boxing Hall of Fame” in Madison Square Garden, and including the five-page Jack Johnson letter detailing his “fix” of the 1915 Jess Willard fight. Stanley Weston presided over The Ring Magazine for many years.
