Heritage Auction Sets Guinness World Record
Heritage Comics has announced that Guinness World Records in London,
England, has confirmed that Heritage's October 13, 2002 sale -- which, among
other items, included the bulk of actor Nicolas Cage's highly publicized comics
collection -- set a record for the world's largest auction of comic books,
comics art, movie posters, and related memorabilia.
According to Heritage's original claim to Guinness, "A new record was established on Sunday, October 13, 2002, for the world's largest auction of comic books, comic art, movie posters and related memorabilia. The four-day sale, conducted by Heritage Comic Auctions of Dallas, TX (www.HeritageComics.com), included $1,680,000.00 in winning bids for the 'treasure trove' comic book collection of Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage. The auction realized $5.2 million overall ($5,207,430.65). The previous record was just over $5 million, set just three months earlier when Heritage sold, among other properties, the reference collection of Stan Lee, co-creator of Spider-Man and other super-heroes. No other firm has ever sold more than $2.2 million in a single comic book auction."
