Tokyopop to Publish Akira Movie Books, Lupin the 3rd

.html
Tokyopop has secured the publishing rights to the movie books for Katsuhiro Otomo's anime masterpiece, Akira, and the highly popular manga series, Lupin the 3rd.

Created by renowned manga-ka (author) Monkey Punch, Lupin the 3rd debuted in a 1967 issue of Manga Action Weekly magazine and chronicles the adventures of the international master thief committed to stealing from the rich for personal wealth. Since the popular character's inception, the Lupin the 3rd franchise - including a long list of anime TV shows, movies, and other merchandise - has become a national staple in Japan. Tokyopop will publish their English editions of the classic series in its original right-to-left format.

Considered the most successful anime feature film of all time, Akira is set in the dystopian post-war megalopolis known as Neo-Tokyo. Within this crime-ridden mega-city of the future, two childhood friends find themselves in a massive government cover-up that could cost them - and countless others - their lives. Their only hope may be a mysterious young boy named Akira who wields the power to either change the world - or destroy it. The movie books that adapt this anime masterpiece will join the publisher's growing catalog of Cine-Manga titles (digitally captured screen stills laid out in a storyboard format).

"We are thrilled at the opportunity to release such treasured classics as Lupin the 3rd and Akira, two series that hold tremendously high esteem with both anime aficionados and the mainstream public," said Tokyopop Founder and Chief Executive Officer Stuart Levy. "These acquisitions could not be more timely as we continue the expansion of our successful authentic manga and Cine-Manga businesses."
