Free Comic Book Day Spotlight: Dungeons & Dragons!
Remember: You must buy at least $45.00 worth of the Gold Sponsor titles
in order to be a participating retailer for FCBD 2004. You must also own a
storefront business and agree to give away the comics on July 3,
2004.
Wizards of the Coast has joined with Diamond and Alliance to promote FCBD, comics, and games all at once, thanks to Crisis in Raimiton: An Adventurers' Guide to Dungeons & Dragons (APR040048J, FREE). Written and drawn by D&D artists and players, this comic book provides a simple yet exciting glance into the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Retailers who are participating in FCBD 2004 can receive a bundle of 25 of these 32-page, full color comics absolutely free, simply by ordering them on the April Retailer Order Form.
And to make this promotion even sweeter, Wizards of the Coast is putting its money where its mouth is, providing not only this free comic book, but also acting as a Free Comic Book Day Superhero by donating funds to the Free Comic Book Day Committee for use in advertising FCBD!
A Quick Synopsis:
This comic book was created to generate interest in the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy roleplaying game and to teach those new to the game what roleplaying and adventuring is all about. Comic book readers are the perfect audience for the Dungeons & Dragons game and by creating a "learn to play" comic book, Wizards of the Coast hopes to introduce new players to the unique experience that is Dungeons & Dragons.
The story opens in the real world, as Alex joining his first D&D game. Matt, the Dungeon Master, helps Alex create his character while the other players get ready for an exciting evening of gaming. Quickly things move into the fantasy world of Raimiton where our party of characters - Ari, Denadria, Merrick, and Vandal - discover that something is definitely wrong. Follow the adventures of the group as they meet the local townsfolk, only learn of the evil Constable Malaere and his crew of undead taxmen who are terrorizing this quiet town. Now the fun begins!
Thirty years of Dungeons & Dragons!
Wizards of the Coast marks the 30th anniversary of the world's most popular fantasy roleplaying game with new products and public events in 2004. Free Comic Book Day is just one more way that Wizards of the Coast will encourage new players to begin their journey into roleplaying and entice lapsed players back into the game. Since it first released in 1974, the Dungeons & Dragons brand has taken millions of players on imaginary adventures of epic scale. Today, Dungeons & Dragons is universally regarded as the original game that created the roleplaying game category and the inspiration for generations of game designers.
"We're very proud of the long history and profound effect that Dungeons & Dragons has had on the gaming industry," said Liz Schuh, Marketing Director for Wizards of the Coast. "The 30th anniversary campaign is our way of thanking the players for everything they've done to enrich Dungeons & Dragons and also to introduce on of the most creative, imaginative games ever made to a whole new generation of players."
Why it's good for Free Comic Book Day (and you!) and how you should use it:
Wizards of the Coast has embarked on a major marketing campaign for the 30th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons, planning a year-long campaign filled with exciting new products and events, including Free Comic Book Day. Charles Ryan, Brand Manager for Roleplaying Games, said, "Free Comic Book Day is a terrific initiative for the comic industry and comic fans, many of whom are also D&D or fantasy fans. Not surprisingly, many of us here at WotC are comic fans, so we're really pleased to be involved this year--the 30th anniversary of D&D--with what we think is a fantastic book."
The comic was created by comic book fans as a marketing piece intended to generate interest in D&D. This will show comic readers who are already enfranchised in the brand that the comic shop is a great place to purchase D&D products in the future and will encourage new players to return to the shop to pick up the latest releases.
Better yet, for those retailers who currently do not carry Dungeons & Dragons, this FCBD giveaway is a free, easy way to gauge the game's potential in your store. Based on reactions to the comic and the excitement level that readers show, you can determine how successful and lucrative carrying the D&D product line will be for your store!
