As reported by Variety, Warner Bros. Pictures has confirmed that relatively unknown actor Brandon Routh will fill the shoes of the late Christopher Reeve and George Reeves in portraying DC Comics' Superman!

Routh, whose previous credits include work on One Life to Live, Gilmore Girls, Will & Grace, and Cold Case, will play the Man of Steel in Superman Returns, which is being directed by Bryan Singer (X-Men, The Usual Suspects). Warner Bros. also revealed that Gil Adler (Starsky & Hutch, Constantine) will produce the film (Variety.com subscribers can read the article here).

Routh's hiring fits in perfectly with director Bryan Singer's stated preference that the role be filled by an unknown actor, so as to better help audiences accept the person as Superman, rather than as someone playing Superman.

Executive produced by Richard Donner, who shepherded the Reeve Superman films to the big screen, Warner's Superman Returns is scheduled for a 2006 release.
