Marvel Reveals Details on Warren Ellis’ Nextwave, Ultimate Extinction, New Universe
On December 8, Marvel Comics hosted a conference call with Warren Ellis to
answer questions about the upcoming Nextwave #1
(NOV051973D)
and Ultimate Extinction #1
(NOV051935D),
as well as a special announcement regarding the writer's reinterpretation of
Marvel's New Universe!
Marvel is supporting retailers with a free Next Wave mini-poster, advertising in trade publications, in-house promotion in the pages of Marvel's own titles and significant coverage in Wizard - The Comics Magazine and on the Internet.
Ellis discussed the origins of both series and his background as a writer for Marvel. Challenged with the task of tackling an epic tale such as the coming of Galactus, Ellis confronted head-on the sensibilities of audiences in the '60s -- when Jack Kirby & Stan Lee introduced both the galactic gourmand and the Silver Surfer -- and modern readers. Ellis found the need to not only update the characters, but rethink the very rationale of the stories themselves. Denser, more complicated motivations drive the characters of the Ultimate Universe, and the cosmic nature of the writer's Gah Lak Tus is almost beyond comprehension. Readers expecting a simple retelling of classic Marvel tales will be in for a very big surprise.
On a much lighter note, Nextwave promises to make reading comic books more fun by removing needless elements like "plot, character, story and sense," teased Ellis. Based in part on high-energy action films, the antagonists of Nextwave, including Monica Rambeau (Captain Marvel/Photon) and Elsa Bloodstone, face off against super-powered weapons of mass destruction like Fin Fang Foom in a rollercoaster ride Ellis promised would depict "people getting kicked" and "things exploding."
Marvel's big news was a Supreme Power-like revamp of its New Universe of the mid-'80s, shepherded by Ellis. Title newuniversal, the series will feature a mix of old characters and new, re-imagined for a different age. In March, Marvel will tease readers with five one-shots set in the previous incarnation of the New U imprint and just to make sure readers don't miss out, there will be an extra eight-page backup story added to an upcoming issue of New Avengers to kick off the event. Additionally, the publisher plans trade paperback collections of many of the fan-favorite series. When asked why he chose the New Universe for a playground, Ellis was frank.
"I always wanted to take a forgotten franchise and mess with it as a [...] challenge," Ellis said. "At the heart of it, it's science fiction. That fascinated me."
Marvel's announcements are sure to please fans of Ellis' Authority and Planetary, as well as readers of Supreme Power and the Ultimate Universe. Ultimate Extinction #1 carries an FOC of Thursday, December 15 with a scheduled release date of January 4 while Nextwave #1 carries a Final Order Cut-off (FOC) date of Thursday, January 5 and is slated to ship January 25.
