Free Comic Book Day Spotlight: Archie Comics!

.html
Each day throughout the rest of December and all of January, Diamond Daily will turn the spotlight on a Gold or Silver Free Comic Book Day edition. We hope that this will allow you to make the most informed buying decision when purchasing your FCBD editions.

Remember: You must buy at least 25 copies of each Gold Sponsor title in order to be a participating retailer for FCBD 2003. You must also own a storefront business and agree to give away the comics with no purchase required on May 3, 2003.

Among the participating publishers in 2002's inaugural FCBD was Archie Comics, which donated a representative selection of its popular titles for participating retailers to give away. This year, Archie takes things a step further by creating an all-new, original comic exclusively for the event!

Written by Angelo DeCesare with art from Jeff Shultz, Archie & Friends FCBD Edition (JAN030016J, $0.15) features "The Kid Who Wrecked Riverdale!" a story that touches upon the magic of comic books and their ability to inspire imagination and creativity.

A Quick Synopsis:
In this hilarious tale, a young boy is so immersed in reading Archie Comics that he actually believes they are real. Falling into a deep sleep, he soon finds himself in Riverdale, fabled hometown of Archie and his friends! Seeing this as an opportunity to "fix" all of Riverdale's problems, he convinces everyone to put aside their differences and get along. A nice little dream... or is it? He awakens to find his copies of Archie Comics have completely changed, with no conflicts at all! Gone is the fun and the humor... unless he can fall back asleep and set things "straight" again! Will the damage be irreversible?

Why It's Good for Free Comic Book Day (And You!):
Archie Comics appeal to an audience of young boys and girls, the perfect entry-level customer for comics shops. Approximately 55 to 60 percent of that audience is female, making Archie comic books a great way to address the reading needs of female adolescents.

The company's demographics are just one of the reasons it considers its titles "Reader Breeders." Another reason is accessibility to a general audience: with over 90 percent self-contained story lines, Archie titles make the perfect "impulse purchase." They are read, cover-to-cover, several times over.

Furthermore, research shows that children who begin reading comics with Archie often move on to the adventurous fare of Marvel, DC and others as they grow older.

Archie Comics are great any time of the year, with stories written to match the seasons. They are also the perfect comics for special occasions, be it for "trick or treat" bags, Christmas stocking stuffers and Chanukah gifts, Easter baskets, or summer camp backpack stuffers.

In addition to children buying Archie comics, parents and guardians also purchase them for their children. Parents who grew up reading Archie continue to buy these comics for their children, because they know Archie is fun, believable, and safe for kids.

How to Use It:
Since Archie & Friends FCBD Edition is a Gold Sponsor title, you'll have at least 25 copies in your store on Free Comic Book Day (plus any additional copies you wish to order). The most obvious way to use these is, of course, to give them out to children who come to your store either on their own, or with a parent or older sibling. An Archie comic -- with its reputation for wholesomeness and its instant recognition factor -- communicates to a child's guardian that you are a responsible businessperson, and that your store is a safe place for children.

You should also:
Be sure to give a free Archie & Friends FCBD Edition to parents or older siblings who come into the store alone. Hand them the free comic for "the little one at home." Not only will they remember your kindness, but you'll also be jump-starting a youngster's love of comics.
Stock Archie trade paperbacks and digests for impulse buys and for something to point to when a happy customer asks, "Do you have anything else like this?" Plus, when a new fan comes back to your store after May 3, you'll have other titles to sell to them.

The January Previews contains these digests from Archie. They offer a good selection of various Archie tales with a low price point and convenient, easy-to-carry format.
