The description of this series indicates it's about Yang Guo and his wife, Xiao Longnu, who suffer a long separation. In this first volume, however, we don't see these two. At the opening, the reader encounters the beautiful and deadly Chou Lee, intent upon getting revenge against the man who jilted her - Yuan Lu. Forced to wait ten years, she returns more bloodthirsty than ever, only to learn her quarry and his wife have since died and left a child, Shang Lu. Chou kills Yuan Lu's brother and his wife and tries to kill Shang Lu and her cousin Ring Chin, but she is thwarted by orphaned beggar boy Kuo Yung and martial arts master Phantom Ku. Kuo Yung touches one of Chou Lee's poisoned needles and it infects his left hand; then he meets Fong Ouyang, a great swordsman who has gone mad. Jing Guo and Yung Huang, husband and wife martial artists, take in all of the children, including Kuo Yung, who is the son of Jing Guo's old friend Kang Yung. Kuo Yung finds himself torn between Jing Guo and Fong Ouyang, who may be crazy but is still a martial arts master who calls Kuo Yung "son." Fong Ouyang uses his martial arts to hurt and kill, as does Chou Lee. Who will Kuo Yung follow, the kind-hearted Jing Guo or Fong Ouyang?
While we haven't met the Legendary Couple yet, this is an intriguing, action-packed beginning which introduces many characters. Louis Cha (real name Cha Liang Yong) is a well-known author in China; he also wrote Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre and other Kung Fu novels. Wong has been an integral part of Hong Kong's comic industry for years. Legendary Couple is another in ComicsOne's line of Kung Fu Comics, bringing more manhua, Chinese comics, to American audiences. It's full of bright swirling colors, gorgeous art, and complex storylines which will work out over many volumes. While full of action, the book is suitable for middle school age readers, and it will appeal to martial arts movie fans.
