Serial’s King of the Rocketmen Returns in Moonstone’s Rocket Man #1
Look! Up in the sky! Is that bird? Or a plane? No, it’s the King of the Rocketmen! This December, you will believe a man can fly – courtesy of a souped-up jetpack, that is – when Moonstone brings back a Saturday matinee idol in Rocket Man #1 (OCT101068F, $3.99), part of Moonstone’s "Return of the Originals" event!
Decades before Dave Stevens’s Rocketeer took to the skies – and many years before a working jetpack was ever developed – heroes like Rocket Man and Commando Cody scoured the skyways, battling villainy in myriad forms while protecting earthbound citizens from natural disasters, extraterrestrial invaders and manmade menaces alike.Republic’s 12-chapter King of the Rocketmen serial starred Tristram Coffin as Jeff King, a leather-jacketed, helmeted hero armed with an “atomic-powered rocket flying suit.” The character (or one boasting the same trappings, at least) went on to appear in Radar Men from the Moon and Zombies of the Stratosphere, “B” movies released in 1952 at the height of UFO fever. In 1953’s eponymous Republic serial, the hero was renamed Commando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe, an identity maintained in the 1955 TV series.
Blasting out of the classic pulp serials, a new Rocket Man is born! With the original dead, the secret of the rocket suit in jeopardy, and ruthless criminals closing in on the scientist behind the technology, a young man must make the choice between a life of crime and the selfless sacrifice of a hero!
Written by James Kuhoric (Legendary Talespinners) with art by Hannibal King (The Phantom), this issue also includes an all-new tale of the high-flying G-8 by Shannon Denton & Amin Amat! Boasting a cover by Chris Scalf (Star Wars), Moonstone’s 32-page, full-color Rocket Man: King of the Rocketmen #1 soars into stores December 29!
