Republic’s 12-chapter King of the Rocketmen serial starred Tristram Coffin as Jeff King, a leather-jacketed, helmeted hero armed with an “atomic-powered rocket flying suit.” The character (or one boasting the same trappings, at least) went on to appear in Radar Men from the Moon and Zombies of the Stratosphere, “B” movies released in 1952 at the height of UFO fever. In 1953’s eponymous Republic serial, the hero was renamed Commando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe, an identity maintained in the 1955 TV series.
Blasting out of the classic pulp serials, a new Rocket Man is born!
