Marvel Extends Avenging Spider-Man #1 FOC, Outlines Promotion Plans


Via an email to retailers, Marvel has announced that the FOC date for Avenging Spider-Man #1 (SEP110536D, $3.99) has been extended to October 24, revealed the cover artwork for the 1:50 Joe Quesada Variant (SEP110537D, $3.99) and 1:200 Quesada Sketch Variant (SEP118075D, $3.99), and outlined how it will be promoting the first issue.

As a reminder, the first issue from writer Zeb Wells and artist Joe Madureira will also be polybagged with a physical code for a free digital copy of this issue on the Marvel Comics app. This offer applies to all cover versions of the comic, and the digital copy will be available from both Marvel’s app and Chrome store.

Here are some items of note on how Avenging Spider-Man #1 is being promoted, as outlined by Marvel: 

  • Avenging Spider-Man #1 now appears on the Diamond Vendor site as AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #1 WITH FREE DIGITAL CODE with the variants carrying this tag - WITH FR DIG CDE.

  • An ad appears in the digital Avenging Spider-Man Daily Bugle promotes the print version of the first issue with a free download.

  • Premiere placement on the homepage of the Marvel Comics app (with a reach of over 5 million users who have downloaded the app to date) will point consumers to retail locations to pick up the print edition.

  • Expected press coverage in both mainstream media and top comic websites including Marvel.com will tout the free download only available through the physical copy.

  • An e-mail blast will be sent to Marvel Comics app users, as well as Marvel.com newsletter subscribers (nearly 1 million recipients) pointing to retail locations.

  • Print house ads will be revised to point out the free digital copy.

We’re also developing a program designed to drive digital customers into brick and mortar comic shops to help increase their business. Bringing the worlds of print and digital together in this way gives the customer a great value and one we’re sure will result in even greater sales for retailers.”

While Avenging Spider-Man #1 (SEP110536D, $3.99) now carries an FOC date of October 24, it is still scheduled to go on sale November 9. Retailers placing their orders through that FOC can qualify for the following incentives:

  • For every 25 copies of the regular edition Avenging Spider-Man #1 you order through its FOC, you may order one Humberto Ramos Variant (SEP110538D, $3.99).

  • For every 50 copies of the regular edition Avenging Spider-Man #1 you order through its FOC, you may order one Joe Quesada Variant (SEP110537D, $3.99).

Madureira is revered by fans worldwide for his comic art in such titles as Uncanny X-Men, The Ultimates 3, and Battle Chasers as well as his work on Darksiders and other video game hits. This exciting new series should command that following’s attention and reintroduce the creator to newcomers.But don't overlook the potential impact Wells's involvement should also have on sales.
