Static-X Promotes Chaos!, Comics
Industrial metal band Static-X is more than
merely the subject of a new comic from Chaos! - the band is also one of the
title's biggest boosters, promoting the July-solicited title in multiple venues
to new readers.
Static-X is one of the top industrial metal bands in the world, having sold more than one million CDs. It has toured on OZZFEST and the Family Values Tour, has a dedicated built-in fan base (5 times bigger than Insane Clown Posse), and has songs on the recent Queen of the Damned and Resident Evil soundtrack. This is a group that is known and noticed in the mass market. The band is currently on tour and is aggressively promoting the comic book at each stop, something retailers should take into account when placing orders and Reorders.
How aggressively is the band promoting the comic? Consider:
• Static-X has a website with an e-mail list of over 70,000 names. Two months prior to the comic shipping, countdown emails are being sent out every week to drive fans to comic shops.
• Static-X is plugging the comic book in all interviews conducted during the tour.
• The Static-X site has featured five separate articles about the comic, educating their fans how to get the comic at comic shops.
• The site also runs news along the news ticker running across the top, whenever they get a new release. They currently have the download preview of footage from the comic book CD for their fans to view.
• The band distributed 25,000 postcards on tour promoting the comic and the Comic Shop Locator Service
Also, thanks to Static-X's involvement, the following pop culture markets have promoted the comic book:
• MTV has run 3 news releases on their site, which gets 5-10 million hits a day. Further coverage from MTV about the comic is forthcoming.
• Billboard has 2 features on its website, which gets 1-3 million hits a day.
• Revolver Magazine, a major music periodical (circulation of 150,000), has a complete feature article and a contest spread in their July issue in regards to the Static-X comic, featuring an interview with Brian Pulido and the band.
• Metal Edge Magazine (circulation of 150,000) is covering the comic in their summer issue and Executive Editor, Paul Gargano, has written an introspective to be included in the comic book. Paul is a highly respected person in the rock 'n' roll field.
• Hit Parader (circulation of 100,000 +), Guitar World (circulation of 180,000) and Circus Magazine (circulation of 130,000) are featuring editorial content as well on the comic book in their current to next issues.
Furthermore, the Static-X comic book is being promoted through all music affiliated companies like Billboard.com, Billboard Magazine, MTV.com, MTV, Circus Magazine, Revolver Magazine, and MetalEdge Magazine.
Chaos! has also done its part to promote the book to a wide audience:
• The CD included with the comic book features over 12 minutes of video of behind the scenes and interview footage of the band on tour, which fans have never seen before, making it highly attractive to fans of the band who do not normally buy comics. (Chaos! has posted a 1-2 minute Quicktime teaser of the CD to entice fans.)
• Chaos! has enrolled street teams to pump the comic by hand-distributing thousands of fliers.
• Chaos! has posted preview pages of the comic on its website and promoted the site to music and fan sites.
• Chaos! makes weekly announcements about the comic book via e-mail to a list of 1,000 Static-X fan and music industry sites, and to the 70,000 fans registered on the Static-X official site.
